Jacob Lawrence, Whitfield Lovell & Alma Thomas
phew! it was close. I almost missed Jacob Lawrence's Migration Series and Whitfield Lovell's Kin at the Phillips Collection. Today was the last day for both exhibits. I wasn't alone. Both galleries were packed. amazing! fabulous! exquisite!
After viewing those exhibits, I moved to a gallery of their permanent collection that was less crowded. and there it was: Alma Thomas' Breeze Rustling Through Fall Flowers, 1968.
ding! ding! ding!
Alma Thomas is one of my favorite artists. and it's dated 1968!
Is it possible to discover what day she actually completed it? I wonder if it was exhibited in 1968? I've read that this painting was inspired by a retrospective exhibition at Howard University, where she created her Earth Paintings series.
I hope to find an exhibition catalog, article or review about this exhibition and the painting.
