I have a gorgeous view of the Washington Monument from my apartment.  I never tire of looking at it or the expansive vista of the city.

The photo above was taken by Lionel Yearwood on a visit to the city in October 1968.  Check out his other photographs of Washington memorial sites here.

In a previous post, I mentioned that the MLK Library would be closed until at least 2017. The Washington Monument will be closed at least until Spring 2019.

What are your memories of visiting the Washington Monument?  Did you ever take the elevator all the way to the top?

To learn about the history of the monument, check out A History of the Wasington Monument, 1844-1968, Washington, DC by George J. Olszewski (April 1971), here.
