James Horton, who was the Benjamin Banneker Professor of American Studies and History at George Washington University and Historian Emeritus of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History, passed away on 20 February 2017.

He was a committed academic and public historian.  He served as a model for how one could write history for the public at a time when it was uncommon for a university professor to do so.

And he loved what he did!  He was one of the happiest scholars I knew.

Read an article about him from the GW Hatchet newspaper and the Department of American Studies @GWU.
