Ntozake Shange turned 20 on 18 October 1968. Then she was Paulette Williams and a student at Barnard College, a historically white women’s college. She credits her tenure at Barnard with her decisive turn toward activism and the arts.
Shange donated her papers to the Barnard Archives and Special Collections.
