#OTD 2 April 1968 The annual Cherry Blossom Festival officially began with the lighting of the historic Japanese Stone Lantern at the Tidal Basin. Approximately 1,000 individuals attended the 41st festival amidst the swirling of cherry blossoms on this windy day. The event took place at 3pm. Later in the day, at 9pm, the Princess Presentation Ball was held at the Washington Hilton Hotel.
