9 april 1968 & taquiena boston diary entry on dr. king's funeral
#OTD 9 April 1968 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s funeral was held today in Atlanta. Taquiena Boston, 13 yrs old, writes about it in her diary.
"There was no school and my parents were home from [work] today. We watched the funeral of Dr. Martin Luther King on tv. Such people as Mahalia Jackson; Harry Belafonte; Sammy Davis, Jr.; Senator Robert Kennedy and wife; Mrs. John F. Kennedy; Ted Kennedy.; Mayor Lindsay; Sidney Poitier; Nixon; Rev. Fauntroy; and many others. The funeral lasted seven hours. For the first time, I cried because of the loss of Rev. King. When I think of him, I realize how wrong I was. All I've ever wanted is glory for myself. In a way, I still do. I've thought of helping other people when I made it. But, in a way, it was for personal glory. It's time I and the nation made a change. The Black Power militants are planning another attack of guerilla warfare and violence this summer. In a time that we need God, most people are turning away. Well, I won't. This is the last day as 13 years old."
