#OTD 27 May 1968 The U.S. Department of Agriculture (12th St & Jefferson Dr, SW) presented a display showing changes in free food offered to individuals and families who were economically poor. There were food displays showing what was offered in 1960, 1968 and one representing food coming "soon."
The 1960 foods:
lard
enriched rice
yellow corn meal (enriched, whole ground)
nonfat dry milk (powdered)
all purpose flour (enriched, bleached)
The 1968 foods:
lard
raisins
enriched yellow corn grits
rolled oats
yellow corn meal (enriched, whole ground)
dry pea beans
enriched rice
chopped meat
instant mashed potatoes
dry yellow split peas
pasteurized process cheese
peanut butter
bulger
potato flakes
The foods coming soon:
mashed potatoes
farina
chopped meat
cheese
canned milk
shortening
prune juice
rolled oats
pea beans
butter
grape juice
canned chicken
apricot nectar
egg mix
wheat cereal
