23 june 1968 & sclc's resurrection city permit expired today

#OTD 23 June 1968 The organizers of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) were working overtime to develop new strategies to continue the Poor People's Campaign. Since the National Park Service refused to extend the permit for the continuation of Resurrection City, they had to regroup. Organizers helped the residents of Resurrection City who planned to leave the encampment on the Mall. There also needed to be plans for those who were refusing to leave Resurrection City despite the permit expiration.

Since there were activists staying at the Hawthorne School, Pitts Motor Hotel (1451 Belmont St, NW), churches and the homes of 50+ families, organizing could continue without the encampment.
