Independent Press in DC and Virginia: An Underground History (by Dave Brumfield, 2015) spotlights underground newspapers during the 1960s and 1970s, including The Washington Free Press and Liberation News Service which were in operation in 1968.  It's a well-researched intro to the many newspapers and news outlets that were part of a vibrant and complicated independent press milieu.
