#OTD Sunday 7 January 1968 the First Baptist Church of Deanwood held its first Sunday service for the year. The church, 45th Street & Sheriff Road, NE, was pastored by Reverend Andrew J. Allen. One of Pastor Allen's mottos was "Yours for a better world." It expressed itself in the wealth of services available to the cross-generational congregants, to its Deanwood neighbors and the city.

Allen was also head of the Baptist Ministers Conference of Washington and a member of the Far Northeast Ministerial Association. Through these organizations, the church hosted Christmas dinners for the homeless and hosted carwashes to raise funds for the Poor People's Campaign.

Your comments are welcome below. Do you remember Pastor Allen's first sermon of 1968? Do you have a church bulletin from 1968?
