#OTD Monday 8 January 1968 Pride Inc. began working on its contract to clean and paint Clifton Terrace at 13th & Clifton Streets, NW. Pride Inc. was co-founded by Marion Barry, Carroll Harvey, David Rusk, Mary Treadwell, among others, in July 1967, as a "youth-run corporation" and "job training program" to help "hard-core dudes become self-sufficient." By #TDIH more than 1000 individuals had worked for Pride.

Clifton Terrace was a 270-unit, 3-apartment complex, owned by Sidney J. Brown, white, of First National Realty Corporation, who had been cited for myriad code violations and sentenced to 60 days in jail, which he never served. (A later story will discuss the tenant activism at Clifton Terrace and the court case, Saunders [a.k.a. Javins] v. First National Realty Corporation, a landmark case in tenant rights.) Brown sold the building to the Housing Development Corporation, a non-profit housing organization, run by Rev. Channing Phillips, who gave the contract to Pride.

Your comments are welcome below. Did you work for Pride? Were you one of the workers at Clifton Terrace? Did you live at Clifton Terrace? You can also contact me privately here.
